The Not Forgotten Association Trek Iceland Challenge 2016 For Graeme Barlow

Graeme Barlow, one of the Directors of Barlow Trailers Ltd, will be acting as part of the support team for The Not Forgotten Association’s group of injured serving and ex-service men and women, many of whom will have recently sustained their injuries. The group will include single and double amputees, others who have sustained brain, sight and other injuries, as well as those suffering from PTSD and other mental health problems.

This memorable 5 day challenge with 3 days trekking and overnight camping under the stars goes deep into Iceland where volcanoes and mountains tower overhead, glaciers and waterfalls carve out the landscape whilst geysers and hot springs bubble up from far beneath our feet. This will be a wild hiking experience, starting across lava and snow fields towards the hot spring of Storihver before crossing fields of glistening black opsidium rock. We will swim in the huge volcanic lake of Alftavatn and wade through ice-cold glacial streams. We will trek along deep gorges and over desert-like passes crossing rivers with rope bridges en route to the valley of Thorsmork. Here we will be surrounded by towering mountains and giant glaciers along with raging rivers, waterfalls and craggy peaks.

Although those taking part will have recovered sufficiently from their injuries to be able to undertake this challenge, the association would not be able to run the event without the back up of a support team. Graeme will be required to provide actual physical help to our beneficiaries from time to time, as well as to offer encouragement when they are experiencing difficulties.

The Not Forgotten Association is a unique national tri-service charity which provides entertainment, leisure and recreation for the serving wounded, injured or sick and for ex-service men and women with disabilities. They do this through a wide and varied programme of activities including outings, concerts, holidays, events and the provision of televisions and TV licences. Each year they help and support approximately 10,000 individuals of all ages, whenever and wherever they served.
