Wraps come off golden jubilee horsebox
Europe’s biggest trailer maker celebrated its 50th anniversary in style by unveiling a new flagship horsebox with “wow factor”.
According to Ifor Williams Trailers, they have applied the standards of top car manufacturers in building the horsebox with flowing lines. They even used the same test track as Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson to put the new trailer through its paces. Inside, owners can opt to have a camera installed so that the horse can be monitored during transit. The eye-catching horsebox is the latest in a long line of innovative trailers from the iconic Welsh company.
It made its public debut at a special open day at IWT Deeside, on Deeside Industrial Park, where it is going to be built. Since the company was established in Cynwyd, near Corwen, in 1958, Ifor Williams Trailers has made more than 500,000 trailers. To mark the anniversary year, all the trailers produced in 2008 will be branded with a golden jubilee logo.

Managing Director John Williams said: “We are very proud of what we have achieved over the years and of our Welsh roots. “We believe the unveiling of the horsebox is a fitting way to celebrate our 50th anniversary and a tribute to all that is best about the company.”
“Although the look and styling are different and contemporary, the heritage of the company that has been built on quality and durability is plain for all to see.
“This is a special year for us and this is a special horsebox, one that is worthy of becoming the flagship of our range.”
Andrew Reece-Jones, the Design Engineering Manager, is confident that it will be a big hit with horse owners across Britain and the rest of Europe.
He said: “Our existing horsebox has evolved and improved over the years but the new horsebox is radically different and more stylish, with flowing lines. This is more revolution than evolution.
“The new horsebox has a new shape and a new look. It is a major leap forward and it certainly gave me the wow factor when I saw it for the first time and I feel sure our customers will feel the same way.

“During the development of the horsebox, I had seen drawings and prototypes but it was just something else to see it in the flesh as it were. It is a very impressive trailer and there is nothing like it on the market.
“We have made it more automotive in its design so that it is sleeker and more sophisticated.
“We have also been able to design and style our own mudguards so the new horsebox should look better with a car or a four by four.
“Many of the improvements that we have made are beneath the surface in that they are improvements to our manufacturing process. The build quality is even better than before.
“A lot of the features like the larger window, the catches on the top doors, the vanity mirror and the option of a camera to monitor the horses have been introduced as a result of listening to our customers.
“We’ve taken on board what they have asked us to improve and introduced even more improvements like a lockable groom’s door and colour coordinated handles.
“The camera fits inside the trailer and transmits a picture to a monitor inside the vehicle so you can see how the horse is behaving and how comfortable the horse is.
“Whilst you wouldn’t be looking at the screen whilst you’re driving it allows your passenger to keep an eye on the horse and feedback the welfare of the horse in transit.
“The environment that the horse is transported in is extremely important and we’ve taken a lot of care to make that area clean, smooth and bright – and as comfortable as possible.
“We have not compromised on fittings and fixtures in the trailer. Virtually everything you see is unique and specially designed for the purpose.
“We have a reputation for being the best and we see ourselves as the leaders in trailer manufacture and that means setting higher and higher standards for ourselves.
“With the new horsebox, we believe we have achieved an automotive level of finesse with the build quality and the finish of the horsebox.
“We took it to a test track where Jaguar and the other car manufacturers go – Jeremy Clarkson was there filming for Top Gear the week before we were there.
“That meant we were able to test it rigorously and make sure everything was absolutely right before going into production.
“I really do believe it’s going to be the best horsebox on the market and I am confident it will be a huge success.”
